Legal challenge to Google Analytics
Recent ruling by Austrian Data Inspectorate has found that, by using Google Analytics, a website was illegally sending visitor IP addresses to the United States. IP addresses are regarded as personal information.
In Google Analytics, it is possible to anonymize the visitor’s IP address by dropping its last 3 digits. However, the full IP is still sent to Google before this masking happens. This, according to the Austrian ruling, is illegal.
